Thinking about pursuing a new career? There are some factors you need to consider

The year is rapidly coming to an end and you might be starting to consider what you would like your career to look like in 2022. Whilst there is a multitude of jobs available in the current market, there are also some important factors you should take into account before pursuing a new opportunity. Salary is obviously a major one, however there are other considerations you should keep in mind including:

Company history

Firstly, do some research into the company’s history. Although it is impossible to predict what will happen in the future, you will be able to gain an insight into the company’s overall stability and values by conducting research into its history. Through reading online materials including press releases and scrolling social media accounts, you can find out a wide range of valuable information about a potential employer.

Company culture

When conducting research on a potential employer, you should also check whether your career goals align with those of the company. Next, compare your values with the mission statement and core values of the company; you want to personally resonate with both. If you want to make a broader societal impact in your work, many companies partner with community groups and/or support charitable organisations; this might be something extra for you to consider.

Opportunities for growth

If you are in the early stage of your career, a job that provides opportunities for growth is particularly important. Whilst working in a job that offers an entry-level salary, you want to be provided with opportunities to gain valuable experience which will strengthen your future employment prospects.

If you are further along in your career journey, it is vital to look for opportunities to develop new skills in a job. Your professional development will be enhanced significantly if you work for a company that offers on-site training or sponsors you to complete professional learning/tertiary courses. Ultimately, you should be pursuing a role that will teach you transferable skills and will help you move towards your bigger career goals.

Work-life balance

Achieving a work-life balance can be incredibly challenging, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic which has caused the separation between work and life to become increasingly blurred. However, your overall health and wellbeing does rely on achieving a manageable balance. It is therefore important to ask potential employers about their policies regarding holidays and remote working, as well as mental health and wellbeing, to ensure that achieving a healthy work-life balance is possible.
